History
McHenry is 50 miles from Chicago, and is served by METRA, Chicagoland Commuter Rail Service, and PACE suburban bus services. McHenry is named for Major William McHenry, who fought in the Black Hawk Wars. The Fox River valley was then being settled. On the west bank of the river at an old Indian ford was begun the town that took its name from Major McHenry. Early enterprises included a ferry, hotel and sawmill. Fifty years saw the advance of wagon roads into town, the railroad passing through it and the establishment of industry such as a pickle factory, flour mills, a newspaper that survived 110 years and the famous Riverside Hotel. Industry and tourism grew, attracting over 21,000 people who bought McHenry real estate by the year 2000.

McHenry is well surrounded by 38 parks. Most of have picnic areas with shelters, some have basketball, baseball and tennis facilities, a few have swimming, some have fishing and boating, some have hiking and biking paths, most parks have playground equipment. There is a tot lot, ice skating and the McBark Dog Park. McHenry Parks also hosts events like the Pre-teen Jam, Jellybeans and Waterslides trip, a Halloween party, casino trip and Christmas festivities.
