ILakeHome5.jpgThe Village of Island Lake straddles the border of Lake and McHenry counties in northeast Illinois. The community of about 8,000 residents surrounds a lake with the same name. Island Lake is on the outer periphery of the greater Chicago metropolitan area. 

Most residential Island Lake homes are single family residences, however there are also few condominiums among the Island Lake homes for sale. Homes here are often modestly-prices due to the distance from Chicago itself. Island Lake real estate does include the estate-type homes, including properties on the waterfront. At the same time, real estate in Island Lake includes small bungalows and established ranch homes that are value-priced.  

History

 In the 1920s, the area just east of Wauconda was nothing more than rolling farmland, Mutton Creek, and a gravel pit. In 1929, a couple of visionary leaders decided to create a dam across Mutton Creek and establish a residential lake development. The Great Depression slowed early development. However, soon thereafter lots were advertised, primarily in the Chicago market. Lots that included lake rights could be purchased for as little as $95. One could erect a log cabin on the property for just $985. In the late 30s and into the World War II period, more and more of these original cottages were converted into year-round homes.


Parks and Recreation 

Families that like to bike together will find numerous trails on which to enjoy time with one another. One trail is the Prairie Trail, a 26-mile trail that follows a former railroad line. Overall, Island Lake residents enjoy ready access to a network of over 100 miles of hiking and biking trails including the Fox River Trail, the Great Western Trail and the Illinois Prairie Path.

Veterans Memorial Park Island Lake ILThe Chain O' Lakes area of northeastern Illinois offers endless recreational possibilities like water skiing, windsurfing, boating, and jet skiing. Avid anglers will be able to search out favorite hotspots among the dozens of lakes in the area. Chain O' Lakes State Park is centrally located, and it borders on three of the lakes: Marie, Grass, and Nippersink. The 6,000-acre park even includes horse rentals for horseback riding. Horse-drawn wagon rides are also offered. this state park offers miles of trails, seven picnic areas, and two large campgrounds.


Attractions and Events

Owners of Island Lake homes can enjoy one of the largest amusement parks in the United States, Six Flags/Great America. Six Flags features some of the more exhilarating roller coasters in the country, including classic wooden ones. The expansive facility also offers a water park and many experiences scaled to younger children.

Those that decide to invest in homes for sale in Island Lake can head to the largest corn maze in the world in nearby Spring Grove. A Maze Til Midnight event is ideally experienced with flashlights or glow-sticks in hand. The corn maze is open until midnight for this popular pre-Halloween event.
